How we calculate

Your FIRE number is your annual expenses divided by the withdrawal rate. With the well-known 4% rule, you need 25 times your annual expenses.

The simulation is monthly: the annual real return becomes its monthly equivalent, (1 + r)^(1/12) − 1, and your contribution is added each month. It stops when the portfolio reaches the FIRE number, up to 150 years.

Because it uses real returns (already net of inflation), every amount is in today’s euros: your expenses and contributions keep their purchasing power throughout the simulation.

The 4% rule comes from historical studies of US stock and bond portfolios (the Trinity Study) and does not guarantee the money will last. For very long retirements, many people use 3-3.5%.

Taxes, fees and state pensions are not included. Educational use only, not financial advice.
